What Is Electrocardiography?
An electrocardiogram is a helpful diagnostic test used to detect heart disease. Electrocardiography involves recording the heart’s electrical activity.
An ECG may be recommended if:
- Your pet’s heart rhythm is difficult to hear during a physical exam
- We suspect your pet’s heart rhythm is irregular
- Your pet is taking a drug with potential cardiac side effects
- Your pet experiences fainting or respiratory health problems
During an ECG, our vets will place electrodes – harmless clips – on your pet’s chest and legs. The electrocardiogram will evaluate your pet’s heart rhythm and look for any abnormalities in their heartbeat. The process is pain-free and your pet will be comfortable from start to finish. Most animals do not need to be sedated or anesthetized to undergo an ECG, though we may administer anesthesia if your pet is particularly skittish, fearful, or unable to remain still.
Once testing is complete, our veterinary team will review the results and make a diagnosis. From there, we can recommend an appropriate course of treatment.
